Non-Profit Offers $75K For Your Weight Loss Idea
Actually, it’s a contest called Ruckus Nation that will award cash prizes for the best ideas for fun and cool products to get kids moving.
This online competition is open to almost everyone worldwide, no matter what your age or location. See the rules for any restrictions that may apply to you.
The competition is sponsored by a nonprofit organization called HopeLab.
HopeLab was founded in 2001 by Pam Omidyar, a former biomedical researcher, to improve the health and quality of life of young people with chronic illnesses.
If you’re wondering why her name sounds familiar… yes, Pam is married to eBay founder, Pierre Omidyar.
HopeLab started with a videogame that encourages kids with cancer to stay on their medications.
Now HopeLab wants to help in the fight against childhood obesity.
So they’re looking for ideas for new products that have the potential to become popular with kids AND get them to increase their physical activity.
You can submit your idea as an individual or as a team of up to 6 people.
There are 4 competition categories:
- Middle School/Junior High School
- High School
- College/University
- Other
You need to submit your idea in writing in 2 pages or less. You can also submit an optional illustration or video.
One Grand Prize Winner will receive more than $75,000. But there are over $300,000 in cash and prizes.
After the prizes are awarded, HopeLab will support the development of product prototypes. The best prototypes will probably be turned into final products to be widely available to kids.
You must register for Ruckus Nation by October 15th at 5PM PT. But registration may be closed earlier if enough people join.
So if you’re interested in fighting childhood obesity, join now.
They have an early entry deadline, but the final deadline for entries is November 20th by 5PM PT.

Cool idea. I wish I could think of something.

Is this the American way or what? Throw money at a problem and see if you can solve it.

It’s a worldwide problem, not an American thing, Rob. I’m racking my brain for something to enter to get that 75k prize.

I think this is a great idea to help kids and adults, too. I wouldn’t mind knowing what the results are, it might be something I’m interested in. Dance Dance Revolution was for kids, but I love it, too.

While I like the idea of finding new ways to get children to exercise, do we really need a contest? Can’t we just tell them to go outside and play?

I think this is a fantastic idea! Anything to get kids exercising is okay in my book.
