Critters Invaded My Office

If you’re a regular reader, you probably noticed that my blog entries disappeared after Wednesday last week.

Well, as the title says, critters invaded my office.

They’ve actually been hanging around for a few weeks. But I thought the noise was from birds nesting.

Then my bee control guy, who knows everything about the animal kingdom and is NEVER wrong, told me it was too early for birds to be nesting in this area. Especially with our unusually cold spring.

So I was thinking, this is not good. Because whatever they are, they’re in the structure.

Then the animal control guy came out, heard them squawking for about a millisecond, and told me I had raccoons.

So you can probably guess why I vacated. Quickly.

Actually, even though I’d never seen them, I’d kinda become friends with these raccoons. (We think there was a nursing mother and an unspecified number of babies.)

I noticed the babies seemed to take a nap between 2:30 and 3:30 every afternoon. So I tried to keep the noise down.

No iTunes blasting from my computer speakers and things like that.

Heck, I even told a deliveryman to keep it down one afternoon so he wouldn’t wake them up.

They were like human children. If you woke them up during naptime, they’d be cranky all night.

I also found out that they liked certain types of music better than others.

They absolutely hated rap. But Maroon 5’s new one, “Makes Me Wonder,” used to calm them right down. I’d put the video on a continuous loop for hours.

They also liked ballads and more traditional rock music. Some alternative.

So you see, I needed the break from staring at my computer screen. Because I’m clearly losing it.

Anyway, the animal control guy put a trap on my roof. But the raccoons took the food and escaped.

We think they left the building. I’ve played rap music at full blast and not a peep.

Sometime this week, the animal control guy has to check inside the structure to be sure they’re gone. So if I stop posting or answering comments or emails, you’ll know why.

There have been some problems in this area with dangerous raccoons. Last year, there were some hanging around during the daytime which suggests they were rabid.

Also, I was warned that if anyone came face-to-face with the mother, they were probably in for a violent fight. Both of the animal specialists were betting the raccoon would win.

So I really had no choice but to get animal control involved.

They didn’t die, though. They escaped.

I was told it was probably too early in the year for them to be rabid. But if I didn’t do something, they would start carrying other diseases soon.

So don’t send me hate mail if you love animals. None of them died. But they also couldn’t stay.

Anyway, that’s what happened. I expect to lose one or two days of posting this week while the place is inspected and cleaned up of any debris.

Hope you had a good week.

Wondered where you went. Glad the critters didn’t get you.

I like the new Maroon 5 song, too. Your raccoons have good taste.
