3 Food Tricks for Halloween Dieters

Will Halloween treats knock you off your diet and ruin your hard-earned weight loss?

Maybe not — at least not if you follow these 3 food tricks for Halloween dieters.

According to a study to be presented at an American Heart Association conference in Orlando this Saturday, here are 3 food tricks to help you with Halloween weight control:

1. As you eat your Halloween treats, keep the candy wrappers in plain sight.

This should help you to eat only half as many mini-size Halloween candies as you would if you threw away the wrappers.

I guess it’s hard to ignore the evidence when it’s sitting in front of you.

And if other people are with you when you’re eating, you don’t want too many candy wrappers piling up in front of you.

We all know that’s an open invitation for “helpful” weight loss remarks from others.

2. After your initial chocolate eating fest, keep Halloween treats out of sight.

The study uses the example of secretaries with candy dishes on their desks.

If you move the dish 5 or 10 feet away, a secretary will eat a lot less than if the dish is right on the desktop. Most people won’t keep getting up to walk to a candy dish.

In the same way, you should put Halloween treats away after the big night so it’s not as easy to binge. The authors of the study believe it’s a mistake to leave the candy out in a dish when you’re home.

3. Control the amount of Halloween treats that you and your kids eat at any one time.

After you enjoy that first dip into the candy stash, take it away and dole it out over a period of days.

The authors suggest that you put a limit on the number of pieces of candy that you and your kids eat per day.

That way, you’re less likely to go on a protracted Halloween candy binge that ruins your diet.

Happy Halloween!

If you put the candy dish far enough away, you can burn off the candy calories with a long walk.
