Diet Pill, Zimulti, May Increase Your Risk Of Suicide

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

The FDA is deciding whether to approve a new diet drug for use in the U.S. European regulators have already approved Accomplia, which is made by Sanofi-Aventis SA.

In the U.S., the drug would be marketed under the name, Zimulti. It’s also known by its generic name, rimonabant.

Here’s the problem:

Is Weight Loss During Pregnancy Safe For Obese Women?

Consumer Alert: Ground Beef Recall

Sunday, June 10th, 2007

After an inital recall of 75,000 pounds of ground beef, United Food Group is recalling another 370,000 pounds due to “unspecified concerns” from the California State Department of Health Services.

The meat may be contaminated with E. coli - with at least 14 reported illnesses in the western U.S. from April 25th to May 18th.

No deaths have been reported. It appears that all patients have recovered.

The meat is both fresh and frozen. It has sell by dates from April 6th to April 20th and freeze by dates from April 23rd to May 7th.

The recalled products were sold under the brand names Basha’s, Inter-American Products, Inc., Miller Meat Company, Moran’s All Natural, Stater Bros., and possibly Trader Joe’s Butcher Shop.

The affected states are Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

I believe the grocery outlets where these products were sold include:

Albertson’s
Basha’s
Fry’s
Grocery Outlet
“R” Ranch Markets
Save-A-Lot
Save-Mart
Scolari’s Wholesale Markets
Smart and Final
Smith’s
Stater Bros.
Superior Warehouse

I don’t know if this is a complete list. The information appears to be changing.

If you have one of these recalled products, either throw it away or return it to the store where you bought it for a refund.

If you have questions about the recall, call United Food Group’s hot line at 1-800-325-4164.

I called the number and was referred to:

http://www.unitedfoodgrouprecall.com

I suggest you check the website for the latest information. Some of the telephone hot line information appeared to be outdated when I called.

With the changes going on in this recall, the information I’ve provided here may become outdated, too.

So again, if you live in any of the 11 states listed, please check the recall information at:

http://www.unitedfoodgrouprecall.com

I’d doublecheck the information by calling the hot line as well at

1-800-325-4164.

If you really want to be safe: if you live in one of those 11 states and you have ground beef, just throw it away. That’s what I’d do. Why take a chance on eating food that may become part of another expanded recall?

Eating Disorders In Men — The Underserved Minority

Monday, June 4th, 2007

Men with eating disorders face a serious lack of treatment options.

When diagnosing eating disorders, doctors usually ask about menstruation and the body image that’s characteristic of women with eating disorders.

There’s been little research done on men with anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating problems.

But a study by Harvard researchers may be the first step toward changing this.

The U.S. government has issued a warning to consumers. Avoid all toothpaste made in China. It may contain a poisonous chemical used in antifreeze called diethylene glycol, or DEG.

According to the FDA news release, here are at least some of the brands that the warning applies to: Cooldent Fluoride; Cooldent Spearmint; Cooldent ICE; Dr. Cool, Everfresh Toothpaste; Superdent Toothpaste; Clean Rite Toothpaste; Oralmax Extreme; Oral Bright Fresh Spearmint Flavor; Bright Max Peppermint Flavor; ShiR Fresh Mint Fluoride Paste; DentaPro; DentaKleen; and DentaKleen Junior.

Original post below:

Tainted pet food killed or sickened many dogs and cats in the U.S. earlier this year. The lethal ingredient was wheat flour contaminated with melamine, a chemical used in plastics.

The FDA traced the source of this contamination to 2 companies in China.

Now there’s growing concern that the problem has moved beyond pet food. To imported products used by humans.

At least one man has been sentenced to die.
