A New Kind Of Valentine’s Day Celebration

Celebrate Valentine's Day A Different Way

No valentine today? Who cares?

It’s time to stop thinking only about the chocolates, the flowers, the romantic dinners. Uh, where was I going with this?

How One Food Got A Doctor Out Of His Wheelchair

In the 1950s, a doctor in Texas discovered a way to get out of his wheelchair and walk again.

Just by eating one food every day.

Maybe you’ve heard of his condition. Over 90% of its victims are men over 30. But women can suffer from it, too, especially if they take blood pressure medications.

Excess weight, especially obesity, is also a risk factor.

But with this disease, it’s important to lose weight gradually and ALWAYS under a doctor’s supervision. Any kind of severe dieting can actually make it worse.

So what is this illness and what’s the supposedly magic food that got the Texas doctor out of his wheelchair?

Are Bacteria Making You Fat?

Is there a link between obesity and the types of bacteria in your gut?

Jeffrey I. Gordon, MD, of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis seems to think so.

Losing Weight: What Do You Owe To Other People?

One of my favorite bloggers, Melodee Helms, posted yesterday her “Official Thursday Weigh-In.” She seems to be stuck at 173 pounds, at least for the moment.

I think what impressed me most about this amazing woman was that she didn’t whine about not losing any more weight. She didn’t make excuses.

No, she was worried about what other people might think of her.

Specifically, she worried that her loyal blog readers might be disappointed in her, might not like her any longer.

Alli (Orlistat) Diet Drug Gets FDA Approval

After receiving FDA approval, GlaxoSmithKline PLC will begin selling an over-the-counter version of the weight-loss drug, Xenical (orlistat), sometime this summer. The 60-milligram capsule will be marketed under the name, Alli, and is expected to cost about $1-$2 a day.

It will only be about half the strength of the prescription version of the drug.

Alli is only for people 18 years and older. It should be used in conjunction with a low-fat, reduced-calorie diet and exercise.

Apparently, by itself, it won’t do much for you.

Is Blogging Bad For Your Weight?

True confessions time.

Since I started this blog, I’ve gained 9 pounds. I think it’s only been 2 weeks.

I’m absolutely astounded. I know I’ve been eating more.

I always do that when I don’t get enough sleep. And I’ve been going to bed around 3 or 4AM and getting up by 6 or 7AM for weeks now.

When I’m sleep-deprived, I tend to reach for food to try to stay awake.

But I haven’t needed to lose weight for years. This is truly surprising that when I start to sell a diet book, I gain weight. What does that say about me?

Weight Loss Lessons From A Kid Who Couldn’t Do Math

When I hear from desperate dieters — the ones who’ve tried just about everything and nothing works — I’m reminded of the kids I once tutored in reading and math.

I often got the hardest cases, the ones no one else wanted.

The kids had given up. They just couldn’t do it.

I don’t think I was assigned those kids because I was so much smarter than anyone else. I was just too shy to complain. The other tutors weren’t.

These kids ultimately taught me much more than I taught them. And I believe some of those lessons can be applied to weight loss.

You May Want To Send Hershey A Kiss

Here’s another reason to love chocolate.

The US Postal Service has teamed up with The Hershey Company to offer a $10,000 Valentine sweepstakes.

All you have to do is guess how many Hershey’s Kisses Brand Chocolates will fill a Priority Mail Flat Rate Box. You could win $10,000 for a romantic trip.

I believe the deadline is February 15, 2007.

But check on www.guessandwinsweeps.com to be sure of all the contest details. You can enter there as well.

Good luck!

Can Foods Be Used As Medicine?

Every day, we’re bombarded with messages about foods that are bad for us.

But did you know that medical and scientific studies have shown that eating certain foods may help to prevent or ease certain medical conditions?

By adding these foods to your diet, you may even be able to use your diet for more than just weight loss. It’s like multitasking with food.
